It varies based on scope and commitment, but you're generally looking at anywhere from $3,000 to $15,000 per month depending on how many hours you need and how complex your situation is. Compare that to a full-time CMO hire and the math isn't even close. You're also not paying for someone to learn on the job. A Fractional CMO worth hiring has already made the expensive mistakes somewhere else. They've spent millions on advertising, hired and fired agencies, managed teams, and understand social media, advertising, email marketing, creative content, branding, and everything else within the world of marketing. It's a cohesive system, so in order for a Fractional CMO to be successful, they need a wide range of experience understanding how it all ties together. When you interview a Fractional CMO, make sure to have a candid conversation about their experience and whether you'll be a good match for each other.

Start by getting clear on what problem you're actually trying to solve, because "we need better marketing" is not a job description. Are you launching a new product line? A good Fractional CMO will know that needs to be researched within SEO/GEO to ensure it's not oversaturated.

The more specific you are, the easier it is to find someone whose background actually matches your situation. From there, look for someone with real operator experience in your industry, not just agency credits. Working for an agency does not carry the same weight as working for a company. Ask them to walk you through a real problem they've solved. If they can't do that without hiding behind jargon, keep looking.

If you're past the initial revenue building stage but your marketing is still running on gut instinct and hustle, most likely - yes. Most businesses need a Fractional CMO when they've outgrown doing it themselves but aren't ready to build a full in-house marketing leadership team. This is a sticky area that many stay stuck in unnecessarily simply because they’ve never heard of a Fractional CMO.
You need significant capital to invest in a full-time CMO, so if your profitability isn't aligning for that kind of expense, a Fractional CMO is truly the perfect option. Even if your business can afford a full-time CMO, it still may be unnecessary depending on your team and industry. You need strategy and you need someone accountable to it. You also need someone who knows how to execute, unless you have team members already established for that.
Bringing in an outside Fractional CMO is also often a lot less disruptive to your team than onboarding a brand new executive, and it can lead to a full-time hire if things go well. If you're still in the idea stage or pre-revenue, it's probably too early. Get traction first, then bring in someone to scale it.

A few signals that it’s time: you've been running the same playbook for two years and growth has flatlined. You just closed a funding round and need to deploy it intelligently. You lost your marketing lead and you're not ready to hire their replacement yet. You know on a gut level you’ve grown beyond your capacity to keep up with your own marketing. You're scaling into a new market and you need someone who's done it before. You want to build out a functional marketing machine that is not dependent on you. Any of those situations can suggest that it's time.

First, real business experience, not just marketing experience or agency experience. They need to have led a team, done some foundational improvements like drastically increased email revenue, tripled organic traffic to a site, significantly altered the way their last company ran ads, and so on. A solid Fractional CMO understands a P&L, has managed a brand through hard seasons, and knows how customer service, product development, and marketing intersect. That kind of leadership will think light years differently than someone who has only ever worked inside an agency.
Second, transparency in how they work. You want someone who tells you what's not working, not just what you want to hear. They need to be able to be blunt with you. At the same time, they need the experience to know that you can't just shift the marketing of a company overnight. Initiatives need to be set, and a slow transition for each area within the department needs to be done delicately, with measurable improvements visible before moving on. A Fractional CMO will know how to handle everything from managing team members to understanding what will overwhelm your staff's capacity. The best changes take time and are gradual.
Third, a genuine interest in building your team's capabilities rather than gatekeeping their knowledge. The best partnerships I can commit to are the ones where, at the end of it, you need me less than when we started. If they can't do that, they're not the right fit.
